Is great code enough to build a successful career in IT? Can introverts compete with louder experts when it comes to personal branding? Ahead of her upcoming webinar, I asked Oana Bonu a few quick questions about visibility, networking, and professional growth in the tech industry. Here's what she had to say.
* * *
1. Is great code alone enough to build a career in IT today?
No. Technical expertise is essential—you can't build a long, fulfilling career in tech without strong skills. But expertise alone isn't enough. To grow your career and maximize your impact, you also need visibility. People need to know what you do, what you stand for, and how you can help. The combination of technical skills and visibility is what creates opportunities.
2. Personal branding in tech: a must-have or just a passing trend?
Definitely not a passing trend. In fact, whether we realize it or not, we all already have a personal brand—it's simply what people think of when they hear our name. The real question is whether we're intentional about it. Building a strong personal brand helps create trust, credibility, and opportunities, both inside and outside your organization.
3. Does an introvert stand a chance against loud experts?
Absolutely. Everyone has something valuable to share, and there are many ways to do it. You don't have to be the loudest person in the room or speak on big stages. Writing articles, sharing insights on social media, mentoring others, contributing to communities, or speaking in smaller groups can be just as impactful. Authenticity matters more than volume.
4. LinkedIn vs. in-person networking: which boosts your career faster?
Years ago, I would have said in-person networking without hesitation. Today, LinkedIn offers incredible reach and amplification. But I don't see it as an either-or choice. The strongest approach is combining both: build genuine relationships in person and then use LinkedIn to stay connected, share knowledge, and extend your reach beyond geographical boundaries.
5. The best time to build your personal brand: now, or only after you become a Senior?
Now. Don't wait for a title before you start sharing what you're learning and contributing. Personal branding isn't about being the world's leading expert—it's about documenting your journey, helping others, and building relationships over time. The earlier you start, the more naturally your reputation grows.
